Sony may be a huge company, but the phone side is a fairly autonomous unit based mostly in the EU. Spending on software development doesn't appear too high up the agenda.

You are very much are meant to think "£250-300 worth of rubbish all of a sudden", it's called built in obsolescence and it's been around since the 1950s. Companies spend a lot of time and money to make the new shiny thing look worth buying even though your old shiny thing is only a year old. This sort of thing is hard to swallow when times are tough and £250 is no small deal to most. It's even worse when the time between old shiny thing and new shiny thing showing up gets shorter and shorter.

I think the big phone companies had a look at what happened to HTC - they didn't bring that many new models out and almost went down the tubes. Sony seem by far the worst of the bunch - so many variations of the same thing. "Another big trade show coming up? Quick, crank out another few! How about we take the LED bar off the SP and call it something else? Excellent! Let's do it. We don't want to end up like HTC..."

Well, you can only so that for so long before people get wise and your valuable brand loyalty is gone. I won't be buying another.

Hi,

I bought Xperia SP in Feb 2014. I updated my phone to Android Version 4.3 (update number 12.1.A.0.266) via Sony PC Companion & Now i have following issues with my phone,

I have read in other forums too that a lot of other users are also experiencing similar issue,

Screen Flickering - While i Turn On/Off the display.

Slow - Phone works slowly. Less Responsive now.

RAM Consumption - RAM Consumption is high, above 600MB all the time. Earlier it was half of what it is now.

LED Light Effects - Now it doesn't light in sync with Music played in Walkman. Now it is just lit constant when music is played. No Effects!

Screen Brightness/Backlight - Turning On/Off the Backlight is Not Available. Now i can only adjust Brightness.

Battery - The Battery Drains Out Quickly.

Missing Options - Developer / Screen Shot (holding power key and volume - key is not convenient)

Boot Time - Longer boot Time. Takes a Lot more time now to start.

Camera - Poor Quality Pictures. Very grainy & not sharp.

Ear Phone Music Quality - Not Good. Sony's $50 Portable Mp3 Players Sound Better.

I had none of the issues mentioned above.

PLEASE SUGGEST!!!

I am not happy with the update. Is it Possible to Undo the Sony's Android 4.3 Update and get the Origional Launch Version Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean).

Sunny

________________________________________________________________________________________

________________________________________________________________________________________

Hi,

Kindly do the needful as I have done exactly what was suggested however there’s still no improvement.

• I have tried to repair the software on my phone with Sony PC Companion.

• Done Factory Reset.

• I visited to my nearest Sony Xperia service center hoping to get the Old software version (4.1) back however they do not have it. They have also tried to Update the phone software (Re-updated to 4.3) and Repair however I still have the same issues.

Sony Xperia SP phone after the latest Android Version 4.3 (update number 12.1.A.0.266) isn’t responding well and there are numerous issues with it.

Request you to kindly provide us with some concrete solution to overcome with the problems being faced.

Some of them you can solve by instructions Danial-mach1 wrote couple posts above and some of them maybe with next firmware.

You can always try SUS repair, but for some problems, it won't solve anything.

In some cases there is only one option.. to wait for update. I believe this is one of those cases.

Hello.

I'd like thank all the good people, for all the hard work they've put in, to make this a better phone.

Unfortunately I'm having great difficulty with the new update.

I had to factory reset my phone, I had to reload all my apps. At present, It either lags badly or works ok.

Issues

A lot longer reboot time.

Upon reboot, now always asks to confirm language settings.

Many apps hang and lag to the point a dialouge box appears. "this application is not responding.and will close" opitions available are, "wait, report, ok." It does is this on core aplications like phone text message application. I can only recal it doing it once or twice since I've had the phone. Now it happens 10 plus times a day.

I may have to swipe 3-4 times to answer a phone call.

Batter life shorter and at times, when I plug USB cable in to charge it, it doesn't show its charging. Battery indicator shows % of battery power droping. Must reboot hadset for it to charge.

Differences

Screen Shot process is now very inconvenient. I liked the 1 button process.

When in an app that I could share a link or url, ie. soundcloud, gmail. I could always choose from the options available, ie. Facebook, text message, to copy it to my clip board. Now its not available.

When highlighting a URL or link, options appeard at the top. One option was to copy. Thats not there anymore.

Was happy with my phone until it took the update. What can i do to fix it?

Version is 4.3 and build 12.1.A.0.266

Thank you in advance for your help.

Cheers.

Steve

Sorry to read that. Both for you and for me. Solution-wise I think the only thing to do now is go down the custom ROM route and flash something off the XDA forum on to it now. Not that I'm an expert but I'd 'sure-as-shoot' try and become one if Sony did that to me and knackered my very expensive smartphone after only about a year (I'm not gonna let them though).

Solution-wise for people like me who have been avidly awaiting the SP 4.3 update is not to do it, it seems.

This is actually like history repeating itself, where Sony is concerned. It is a matter of record that similar results were to be gained from updating the Xperia Arcs and Arc S's from 2.3 Gingerbread to 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

It can't help but make me feel slightly cynical and paranoid. Look at the facts. Sony is a hugely rich multi-national corporation. They can no-doubt afford the best coders and software developers in the world. Surely they could release updates to revise and improve the performance of your hardware (the purchase that you've made supporting them; let's not forget) if they really wanted to. **bleep**, it should be **bleep** EASY for a company like Sony. Asus release excellent updates for my mum's 'Fonepad 7' every few weeks. They have an excellent update reputation. But no... instead, what do we get: something very different. Updates that practically obsolete your hard-earned handset after about a year.

The Arcs updates did exactly the same according to the consumer testimony I read. And the Arc S actually had the fastest single core processor of it's time at 1.4Ghz. **bleep** good hardware! Similarly, the SP actually is actually the fastest dual core processor handset available too, I think, at 1.7Ghz. They're both extremely fast and well performing examples of smartphone hardware. Not 'were'; 'ARE'!

So lets also consider how these big companies aim to prosper and grow: by making profits from selling you new phones. Take a minute if you need to... You've probably guessed the rest of my train of thought fairly quickly, eh? It can't pay these people to have you happy with your hardware after a year. Maybe you're supposed to think that it's rubbish? It's purely a rhetorical question. £250 - £300 worth of rubbish all-of-a-sudden? I don't know, I just read consumer testimony and consider a few facts.

And who knows, they might still be trying to rebuild their fortune after the 2011 tsunami?

All I know is I never updated my Arc S, I won't be updating my SP because of what people like you have said, there are some really amazing smartphones coming out of Taiwan and South Korea and the Sony corporation should really pull their pants up in relation to their record of recent smartphone update disasters.

Hello folks, having just recently received the 4.3 update for my Xperia SP I hadn't tried the camera until yesterday. Imagine my shock when the photos that I attempted to take of my wife and son were horrible very softly focussed, blurry images. Now prior to the update the phone took perfectly good photos.

Is there anything I can do to get the camera back to a usable condition?

Help would be gratefully received.
