Have the speedtest.net app, as I said, phones getting about 8 Mbps over LTE, iPod over tethered wifi only 0.020 Mbps, and the laptop just times out loading the web page.

Have another phone, Lumia 925. It tethers fine, WiFi and BlueTooth. BT is limited by the spec to under 1 Mbps, and the Lumia does that quite well, while the Xperia is dialup at best.

Device: Xperia T2 Ultra D5316.

Setup: Phone set to Never automatically sleep the Hotspot, plugged into charger, battery level 90%+, reinstalled T-Mobile Internet settings, 32 GB SD Card installed.

Issue: Tethering doesn't seem to work over WiFi & Bluetooth,

description:A. Ping times are all over the map, from slightly more on the client device (laptop, ipod touch, kindle HDX) then the phone all the way to Latency Fail.

B. Download speed range from 0 to 0.090 Mbps, when the phone is averaging 8 Mbps.

C. Connection frequently drops, requires RESTART OF THE PHONE to reconnect!

D. USB tethering is not an option. Period. And it doesn't work that well either.

Question: Is this a common problem among people who (try to) tether? Am I missing some setting I don't know about? Any suggestions?

At this point I am inclined to return the phone, but since tethering is critical for me, I am likely to return for credit rather than exchange unless I get some good news.

Safe mode didn't effect it. iPod touch was getting about 0.020 Mbps, laptop just timed out. It's unlocked, unbranded, though the D5316 were apparently manufactured for T-Mobile USA, but they declined to carry... Almost moot, because it is now on T-Mobile anyways. Only differance with D5306 is one LTE not supported on the '16.

Download speed test (app) and check your data speed, also do you have another phone with Tmobile? to test tethering?

I wonder if you have the correct APN settings or if there's an app blocking this

Thank you... went to edit the access point names, changed APN Protocol from IPv6 to IPv4 and, viola. Also tried IPv6/IPv4, and got 7.2 Mbps down, 3.2 Mbps up with 87 ms ping times. Sweet!

Just to be clear, for T-Mobile customers who may see this Settings/ wireless & networks: more/ mobile networks/ access point names/ t-mobile data/ APN Protocol then select IPv6/IPv4 and you will be happy with the results. Thanks to uliwooly, because I would never have thought to inspect T-Mobiles downloaded settings.
