Jumping in - my gap on my Z2 is rather large. I am reading your posts, and I will check my batch number. I just bought my Z2 new in Dec 2014 in Canada. Might have sat in the store for a few months. See picture. Seems rather large. Sony Support did a vacuum test and said it passed - however I still got water damage in my phone and my screen does not work properly.

I really love sony, the phones are simply beautiful and the UI is amazing! I was considering buying a Z2 but users have reported having gaps between their screens and the metal covering on the sides, sony did tell them to get a waterproof test from a sony center but i want to know if anyone had the problem and got the test, was it still waterproof? Has sony fixed this in their new upcoming Z2 devices or is it still there? Should i get Z2 or not?

I would recommend waiting a week or so. Sony fixed the issues in newer batches (14W21 onwards). If you're going to buy the Xperia Z2 then make sure you check the device thoroughly before buying it and check the batch number by pulling out the Micro SD tray on the right hand side.

Remember, gaps can be very minimal and can take a lot of time to notice. I noticed the gaps in my phone a week after getting it.

Gaps shouldn't really affect waterproofing because the seal is made over a large area.

EDIT: I wish my ever so focusing eyes hadn't noticed the gaps and I wish I had checked the device insead of just taking the box and paying for it. I have batch 14W20 and camera doesn't heat up as much as others

Not true. There are actually very few issues. The rest are just perception. It's like if someone post and say that their phone is not black but dark grey, then you will start seeing similar posts claiming the same. It's a chain reaction. Much like Lemmings (awww i miss that game) . Then someone will try to be smart and say that it's 80% black and what not.

Sometimes, reading posts are not fun enough. They start wanting to be part of it.

Mine is 14W16 for Europe, and has no gaps in chasis. Also the covers are steady and in place after month of charching, connecting. It would be a market place issue, the first batch went to india and there the gaps were found, markets released later should be already fixed on production stage.

There will definately be gaps between the glass and the edges. This is to cater to the fact that some material like plastic and metal are better conductors of heat and expands. whithout any gap between the glass and edges, the glass have higher chance of breaking. And as explained by someone by Sony on another site I read a while back, these gap does not effect the waterproof capability of the phones. If you still doubt it, you can call yur local service centre to conduct a water test.

I don't know if the device is still water proof or not since I haven't tried it. Waterproofing was never a feature for me anyway and like I said before, it seems pretty pointless when drops of water make the screen register inputs.

I have 14w28 Xperia Z2 model ,it has most of the built / hardware issues:

1) The gaps - mine gone crazy after putting it underwater for the first time, the screen touch isn't responding and keeps touch alone. That all is potentially because the water passed the gaps and entered inside the device which made the device non-waterproof and doesn't respond when I touch the screen (inaccessible), that is disappointing.

2) Inaccurate built - The front camera isn't in the very middle, it's moved towards the top as well as the flash and the rear facing camera...

3) Creeks - everytime I touch the screen I hear creek sounds coming out and especially on the top-right side of the screen.

4) Dirt stucks in gaps - The gaps on my xperia z2 are found all the way round (left ,right ,top ,bottom of the front side and the back side) ,for example my xperia z2 fell on dirt and some dirt is stuck and now I'm unable to remove it.

I have the latest software update and it was fine until I made a huge mistake and put it underwater for 2 minutes to clean it up eventhought some of the dirt stills there.

In short, all these issues mentioned above are the most common and they must be fixed by sony and if you have a phone with gaps don't test it by yourself, let your local support center test it for you .... Finally ,I would like to know what is the number (00w00) of the new models of the xperia z2 with fixed gaps because I'm intrested in replacement if I was lucky and I could do that.

-Thanks ,Alam.

here are some pictures:
