Hi,

Make sure that you have selected album to crop your picture. If you have selected any other photo app you have to go to settings > apps > all > press the app you have selected > clear defaults. If you don't know which one you have selected, you can clear defaults for all apps. Go to settings > apps > all > menu button > clear defaults.

The picture has on exif tag that contains information regarding the orientation of witch the photo is displayed in applications.

So even if a portrait taken picture is saved landscape in memory the tags stored in the pictures tels the photo viewer app that the picture should be displayed in portrait. So when you try to ad a picture to a contact and that picture is taken in portrait mode and when you chose the picture it is in correct orientation, actually the picture is saved in landscape orientation and when you select it and the crop screen appears, the picture is displayed based on the psychical orientation in witch has been saved to memory and not the exif tag orientation..

You can open the picture that was taken in portrait orientation in album, tap on the edit button and open with Photo editor, tap on the crop icon and there you have rotate. You rotate the picture 90 degrease and save it, after you do that in albums the photo appears landscape. You repeat the procedure and rotate photo back in portrait mode and this time the psychical orientation of the file correspond whit the correct rotation.

Sorry for the long explication..

It use to be so straight forward doing this "adding contact photo" when we were having the past update,, but after this 4.4.4 kitkat.... SONY wanted us to do extra step on it..lol
Bro try this..
1. If Portrait position taken photo.
2. Use photo editor.
3. Crop slight smaller (abit will do..)
4. Saved
5. Now... you can use the saved portrait photo for your contact. (this is one of the way i practice myself to use..haha)
Hope it help..
Hmmm till now i still don't know why SONY wanted to make us do extra step.....:-P

Hey there,

I actually just 'edit' it in a different photo app (pixlromatic for example). Even if I don't add any effects, I can save it as a specific photo app. From there, I am able to add it as a contact without it going sideways!

Nice and simple, lol.

If you have a portrait taken picture the file is actually saved in landscape in memory but the exif info attached to the file by the camera tels applications to display the photo in portrait mode even if the file is actually saved in landscape (if you copy photos taken in portrait to your PC [Windows] you can see the photos in landscape and you have to rotate them to portrait to have the correct orientation, because windows doesen't read the exif info for the orientation state of the photo and displays them in landscape)

Wen you want to assign a photo to a contact the editor that crops the photo is reading the actual orientation of the file not the exif one

on the mobile, your portrait taken photos are actually saved in landscape and the idea is to change the physical orientation of the photo to match exif orientation.

If the editor reads the exif orientation of the photo as portrait then you have to rotate the photo once in any direction and save it (so exif becomes Landscape like the actual orientation of the photo) then rotate it back to portrait and save it (Physical and exif orientation are both changed and saved to portrait) so the physical orientation of the file becomes the same with the exif orientation. and the editor wen cropping will see the portrait orientation.

Portrait picture (|) with actual orientation in landscape ( __ ) . So ( | __ ) photos must to become both exif and physical in portrait ( | | ) ...this is the logic

The only thing that could not work is if you use a editor that does not change the actual orientation of the files but changes the exif orientation so the actual orientation could remain landscape.
