wifi tethering issues z1 compact

I am having issues with my xperia z 1 compact. I recently purchased the handset from a friend who was using 3, the phone is unlocked as I am using my ee sim card with no issues.
When I try to tether my laptop to my phone it will connect but I cannot get any Internet access, I have tried with multiple laptops and a different phone with the same result. My 4G signal is pretty constant aswel.
I have also tried putting my sim card into my old HTC one s and managed to connect to the Internet while tethering to my laptop.

So this leads me to think there is an issue with the phone. I have contacted ee and they can't put a finger on why this is happen happening either.

Can anyone help me with this issue? Has anyone else had the same or similar issue?

I have tried changing the apn and I have defaulted any vpns on my phone.

is your phone unlocked or was recently unlocked but still with a carrier specific software?

Apologies for not getting back to you.
It turned out they that apn's that ee gave me didn't allow for my data to be transfered via tethering. Eventhough ee specified that it should work.
