no notifications on messenges

About 4 or 5 days ago sounds for incoming (text)messages stopped working and so did notifications in the top left task bar. Checked sound in settings and made sure it's on full volume. The only way I know a text has arrived is the number of texts badge on the message icon. Help!

Open the messaging app > menu > settings > check under notification settings.

Already done that too thanks, status bar and notification sounds switched on. Tried rebooting phone too

Have you installed a third party messaging app and/or notification app?

Boot on safe mode and check again.

No third party apps. Hangouts is pretty installed but I've never used it.

Follow @Phy 's advice, boot on safe mode, and check again, if you receive notification while on safemode then its a third party app acting up

How to clear data on apps. From your Home screen

1. Tap the Application screen icon.
2. Find and tap Settings > Apps.
3. Swipe to the All tab.
4. Find and tap on Messaging.
5. Tap Force stop > Clear data.
6. Restart the phone

You could also try Settings then tap the 3 dots then tap reset app preferences reboot and test
