Z5 Power button sticking

I have a problem with my power button / fingerprint scanner sticking on my Z5 only a few days old.

Basically when pushing on the button with my right thumb, and also aplying a slight downward pressure (Sliding thumb towards bottom of the phone) the lower part of the button becomes stuck under the body / casing of the phone and will not spring back. It can be released by pushing the button in again with an upward sliding motion. I returned the phone to my dealer, but the the demo phone in store had exactly the same problem. I would like to know if this is an issue with all Z5's due to a design flaw, or if only certain phones are affected. I have attached a link to a photo showing the problem.

Hi,

I have tried pushing/sliding the finger downward/upward at several Z5 here but are unable to replicate this. But note that you should only push the button with your finger and not slide it while you push it.

I've seen others mention this on xda forum, you need to exchange your unit.

Seems Sony are having a quality-control nightmare with camera, buttons, touch screens, other?

Hi, Hampus. Thanks for your reply and trying other phones.

So, we are not alowed to use our thumb? I must have missed the warning on the box...

I must point out that I am not intentionaly pushing at the bottom of the button and sliding it down. I have quite small hands, and when holding the phone in my right hand with thumb on the button, it is a very natural action when pushing the button with the right thumb to have a certain downward movment, Try holding your thumb up and moving it closer to your hand, it moves in a natural inward and downward arc. (Radius)

It is very anoying as the buttom will become stuck about 50% of the time, Again I would stress that I am not intentionaly doing this, it is just a result of natural movment. I feel some phones may have excesivly loose button that is causing the issue, the one I tried at my store, was obviously from the same batch as my phone, so I will try one from a diferent store tomorrow and report back.

Finaly, some hope that its not just me, Im going to try some at other retail outlets (Different manufcturing batches) and hope to find some without the problem. I realy think it is an excesivly loose button alowing too much lateral movment.

No, that's not what I meant. I just wanted to point at that it's not necessary to slide the finger/thumb while pushing the button. But I understand what you mean and yes, I know the natural action that you refer to.

Unfortunately, it's not much that we can do at the forum when it comes to hardware but I will forward this internally.

Exchange it! My first two units had this problem! It was marked as Dead On Arrival.

Thanks for the replies and advice in this thread.

Yesterday I droped into a Sony Kiosk, where I was able to try another Z5 and found no issue with the power button, Today I rang Sony support, explained the problem and they advised me to return the unit to my retailer, I did this and was given a replacement wich thankfully does not show the problem. Basicaly it seems that there are some Z5 handsets out there with loose / slightly imperfect buttons.

Credit where its due, Sony phone suport were polite and helpful, and also to my Telco, Optus for a prompt 'no hassle' replacement. The phone is a real gem, and it was annoying to have this issue.... happy now.

Hi I have similar problem with a black Z5 from O2 UK. The device is brand new and the power button hardy used.

In my case there is also a gap between the top rim of the phone chassis and the power button. When I try to unlock the phone with my right thumb the key is depressed and dragged downwards and below the interior margin of lower rim of the button aperture. As a result the button is trapped there and stays depressed.

The button can only be trapped inferiorly and not superiorly.

O2 will be sending me a replacement phone tomorrow. Will post my experience with the new handset

Seemed to mainly affect the very first shipments, the replacement unit I was given was from a later delivery batch, and has been perfect so far, definately a Quality controll issue I feel. I have also since purchased a Z5 compact and the button design is way better, having a chrome bezel surounding it.

I just gave yesterday my Z5 for replace or repair due to similar problem with power button. In my particular case, power button additionally slips out from the casing, so I need to put it back to switch on the phone...
I observed that construction of the button doesn't provide proper hold. I hope that it is only problem with few pieces, not a general factory defect...
Waiting for my Z5 I bought one week ago. I really like this device

I am about to send my graphite Z5 too because of the same reason of power button being trapped inside
It is very hard to unlock it using this button now.

Im also having the same problem.. i got my z5 on my phone telecom.. and in less than a week, I seem to figure that theres a faulty hardware on the power button. The spring inside seems to have a problem after a several press. Im having a hard time pressing it inorder to close the screen and save batter life.

iaamdeno I think it may be the problem with spring inside too. Not the button itself as fingerprint scanner was still working fine. Send already mine on warranty. Hope it will not happen again.

You know guys, as Sony is still having a huge problems with quality control with camera (blur), buttons, touch screens, other = it puts me off from preordering Z6... I will rather wait until second shipment part to see if all the problems was solved 😕

Just got my Z5 (silver/white), March 2nd 2016. After a two days of use and on occasion power button presses not taking as expected, I looked closely and sure enough ... my power button is tilted too. The end towards the bottom of the phone is a bit lower than the other end which is actually slight above the edge of the side of the phone.

The bottom edge is not yet down so far as to stick and not pop up, but it's REALLY REALLY close.

Working with retailer to exchange.

Same problem here. It's a shame I always come back to this forum to complain: I had bought a xperia m4 aqua that spent 2 months in warraty repairs untill I got my money back.

I thought itwould be statistically impossible to get a premium phone from Sony not working properly, but no...

Bought the xperia z5 and it has this issue. From this point on it just gets really difficult to trust the Sony Brand.

The phone spent 20 days in my hands and 11 (and counting) in warranty repairs.
