So a friend of mine who owns the phone recently upgraded to Android 5.1.1

And ever since he can't see his contacts, not even ICE, or myself. He can't add new contacts either.

His whatsapp conversations, still show contact name, however he can't create a new conversation as the contacts don't load.

I suggested a downgrade, and just checking for an easier solution.

4. Select them all

Hi Eliie,

Welcome to the community,

Follow the above, but try only selecting Phone contacts and then work from there. Tick one at a time and then check the contacts list.

All contacts are sort of frozen. I think it might be something gone wrong with the upgrade. Can it be patched somehow? Can i reinstall the upgrade without losing all data?

You could attempt a backup through PC Companion first and then attempt a software repair.

I cannot however advise if the contacts will backup correctly if they are not functioning correctly as of now. So there is a chance that you may not be able to reload the data back to the device.

Before doing thee above, can you elaborate on the frozen contacts, what exactly do you mean by this?

Well, when i enter into the contacts app, not a single contact appears, not even the ICE one, which comes with the phone, so i concluded that the contacts were not lost. In addition to that, trying to add new contacts freezes the phone. When using whatsapp, all current conversations have contact name. when i click on the bar on top, the one with the profile picture, i go into the page where information appear about that specific contact, like status and other groups we are in together. In that page the persons phone number doesn't appear, instead whatsapp freezes. On the page of whatsapp that containts all contacts, a green loading symbol kepps rotating.
