External Flash issue on a6000

I have tried a 3rd party external flash which claims to work with the a6000 (Neewer NW400s) and my old Minolta 3600HD with a Sony ADP-MAA adaptor and neither works correctly. In each case the flash fires, but not in sync; the photos are as if the flash was not there. I have set and re-set everything I can think of, including a full factory reset, but with no success. Can anyone offer me any guidance?
