I would like to mount my KDL-42W653A tv on the wall and cannot find the wall mounting bracket which, I understand, was supplied when I bought the set. Can anyone let me know how I go about obtaining a replacement, please?

For the KDL-42W653A model, the stand can be also used to wall mount the set, with the addition of a fairly simple bracket kit which should have been part of the initial purchase.

I had the tv on the stand from the start and now I need to hang it on the wall but cannot remember what I did with the original bracket kit and wanted to find out how to get a new one. Any suggestions?

If it turns out it isn't possible, then I will certainly explore for the best fit generic wall mount.

I'd recommend contacting the Sony support team so they can provide you the part number of the stand and the kit. However, you can find the VESA dimension for your TV here as well, it should be a 2013 model.
