The blue ray laser on this unit has gone and will probably cost quite a lot to repair.

It plays CD’s and DVD’s perfectly.

Would it be possible to just buy a Sony Blueray player for around £80 and plug that in either to the back of the player or directly into the Sony TV?

Almost certainly yes, but do you realise you haven’t specified the make and model of the device on which the blue laser has gone, nor the model name of your Sony TV?
