Sony Network Media Player Smp-n100 Remote

Quick question, is there any way to use this device without having the remote control. I know you can download the app and use it by phone, but you need to set-up the connection, which I can't do without having the remote and heading into settings. I even tried using a LAN cable and figured it would auto connect, but it doesn't seem that way and you still need to head to settings to manually put "wired connection". I really don't want to buy a remote.
