Bravia TV, BBC iPlayer and "Internet download failed..."

I have read a previous thread regarding the issue of "Internet download failed because content size exceeds system memory limit".  It appears to remain unresolved, however.  It occurred first yesterday for me.  I had no previous experience of the problem.  I could not put a finger on it, either: first, a one-hour programme would not play, while a half-hour programme seemed OK.  I went to a one-hour programme from last Saturday that my wife had watched and that was OK.  Returning to it later, the message appeared.  I assume repeated playing, or attempts to play, do not accumulate to cause a memory problem.

I have a problem with my Sony DVD recorder, too, regarding "D---" that has occurred recently, too, about which I shall create another post.

My TV is Sony KDL-32W705BBU, purchased in 2014 and my DVD recorder is Sony RDR-HXD870, purchased in 2007.

Yes it would be nice if Sony would acknowledge the problem and the work with the BBC to provide a fix. We all spend a lot of money in our TVs and it’s only right that they should continue to work as intended.

I was alerted to the recurrence, or obstinate continuation, of this issue by a new raft of emails recently.  I discovered a workaround a few months ago and have checked today that the situation remains the same.

1. Using 'Schedule', selecting the day and programme required results in the "Internet download failed..." message.

2. Selecting one of the offerings displayed on-screen after opening iPlayer works without issue.

3. Selecting 'Categories', then 'Documentary' or 'Comedy', for example, works without issue.

4. Selecting 'Search', then typing the name of the desired programme works without issue.

I hope other users discover this works for them, too.

Unfortunately the app crashes whichever route I take to playing a programme. I most frequently use Search and so notice it using this route most often.

Hi. I now have the same problem on my Bravia TV. July 2020. Does anyone also have a recent problem?

Yup. I have a KDL=40W705C(FWL-40W705C) purchased from John Lewis some 3+ years ago .  The fault is very intermittent, occurring several times in a short period, then not at all for several months.  Sony is demonstrating either a surprising level of incompetence or complete indifference to the frustrations of their customers.  Having viewed the brand favourably for many years, our experience with respect to this TV and its recurring fault has changed that view ...... almost irrevocably.

I am pleased with the TV, as a TV, but it's internet capabilities are poor at best

Entirely empathise with the angst of my fellow owners of
Sony Bravia - mine is KD55x8505B. The iPlayer has never been a satisfactory

service via this medium. Kept thinking if it was the weak WiFi signal where the tv located.

bought WiFi booster to rule out this and the problem persists.

I’ve vowed never to buy another Sony tv and for that matter any Sony products in future.

Btw, the built in web browser sucks too.

antiquated with no facility to modernise or seek alternative.

In short a very poor customer experience for such an expensive investment; it simple isn’t a smart tv

I have a KDL-32W705C now 5 years old and recently have experienced the iPlayer problem about internet down ----

Using the search button it allows the programme to start then crashes. I have reset the  router (Netgear N300 -DGN2200v4) as it had a software update but that didn't make any difference. The TV last had a software upgrade in October 2019 (PKG3 006.EVA) and I have reset the internet settings (Wi-Fi) this week but still the iPlayer shuts down.

Sony TV's have always been a good buy having had the 1st one in 1995 and this is the 2nd one. I hope there is an answer out there.

After working fine for a while our Sony TV has just starting crashing out of iPlayer again! The app opens, you select the programme you want to watch, it starts momentarily and than crashes. The joy of IPlayer and Sony!

Hi All

I wonder if minimizing the browsing time and going straight to a program to play makes a difference in the memory used? Did you try a factory reset?
