Hello, this is really weird and baffles me every time. I start to type an sms. I type a few first letters of a recipient's name and for certain contacts it offers me names which don't contain these characters at all! In no fields. And it offers those totaly unrelated contacts on the top of the list! So to find the one I either need to scroll down or type a few more letters.
It seems to happen with some random contacts only and it does not happen in phone in contacts when I tap the magnifying glass and do the same.

@McVitas I have to remove your screenshots as they contain private phone numbers. But looking at the pictures, some of the contacts have the numbers correlated to the letters you insert (J=5, E=3) and so on.
I can't see the screenshots until they are approved by a moderator.
Perhaps those contacts have such characters under other info, such as email, address, etc?

Alexdon really that is making some sense now! But I hope you agree with me that we live i na smartphone time for quite some time already and smartphones have querty keyboard by default. So I am sorry, but it makes little to no sense if you are not the part of minority who still remember what T9 is and how it was used
Oh yes I know one person who uses numbers based keyboard on his Xperia smartphone and he might figure out what the heck this means
But nobody else using qwerty would. I suggest turning this behavior off, because it is only confusing when we are not retro and use normal keyboard instead of T9. What do you think Sony?
