Does the Compass only work when GPS is on?

I have a DSC HX7V - do I have to switch on the GPS function in order to get the compass to work, or can I set it independently?

Hi teejays, welcome to the Sony Forums

I'm not certain how the compass works, but I can't imagine it would funtion without GPS being enabled, as this will almost certainly be provinding the direction data, as well as position.
