Earphones won't work

I've been using Sony headphones with my phone since I bought it, but I recently lost them and had to buy a new pair. Whenever I try to use the new ones, a buzzing noise comes through them and the music plays through the phone's external speakers

I'm sorry to hear that. Are your using wired or Bluetooth headphones with your Xperia device?

If you are using wired headphones, did this happen with your old headphones? Have your tried more then one pair since loosing your old pair?

If you are using Bluetooth headphones I would recommend that you reset your network settings. To do so go to: Settings > Backup & reset > Network settings reset > Reset settings. Note that this will delete any stored Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth connection and Cellular data.
