Hey all,
I've recently been trying to play a few .MKV files and getting odd results. Trying to play them from a USB stick or external HDD crashes Media Player every time with no error message. The file attempts to play and the controls/info banner appears at the bottom of the screen, then the screen cuts to black and I have to hit the Home button to get back to where I was.
Initially I figured they simply weren't supported, then strangely, the exact same files played perfectly when I streamed them to the TV via Plex or XBMC, but not Sony's Homestream software. Neither of the servers are transcoding the files (XBMC couldn't if it wanted to), so they should only be able to play because they're supported by the TV. If this is the case, why do they crash via every other method?
I'm thinking this is the kind of error that's only fixed by a software update, but it can't hurt to ask.

Hello,
I experience similar problem with Media Player crashing on Sony KDL40W605B with the latest firmware installed, but when playing both JPEG Photos and MKV from external 3.0 USB Transcend Hard Drive. When it crashes, first time Sony advised to reset to factory defaults.I did it and it started working. But after while it crashed again. Then I unpluged the power cord, waited for couple minutes and media player started working, but then crashed again. It is not possible the problem to be in the files encoding, I checked with JPEGs that were not showed when media player stopped working first time and then it displayed them, only to stop few images later.
Sony please address this issue soon and provide a firmware fix. I bought this TV only because of the Picture quality, Media Player functionality and average cost. If this is not fixed, I will be forced to return the TV and ask for full money refund.
It is pitty that a cheaper model 40r450B does not show such issues , immediatly indexes usb hard drive content and starts playing with no problem from the same hard drive, while more expensive models like 605B index hard drive very slowly and media player crashes very often.
Dear all,
as documented in this forum and a popular YouTube video (see below), I had this very same problem. After about twenty useless email exhanges with Sony support I finally had to give up and convince myself to stop wasting my time when I realized Sony customer care absolute unprofessionalism.
I had to read thrice this last email exchange I had:
Dear Mr Siorpaes
Thank you for your recent email
We are glad to learn that the issue has been resolved
Please be advised that your case will be closed until further notice; however, any time you want to get back to us in this regards you can provide your case reference and we will reopen it for you
Yours Sincerely,
Amel

Hello Amel,
thank you very much for your offer. However, I solved the problem radically buying a small external video player and connecting it to Bravia TV via HDMI.
Thanks and regards,
David
I can enclose the annoying full duscussion, if you wish.
I suggest everybody to give up and switch to another vendor as you'll never get Sony to help you anyhow. You are just wasting your time.
Hop this helps

As far as I know, the functionality of open formats such as MKV isn't officially guaranteed by Sony. So it may or may not work.
