KDL40NX803 clicking, popping, cracking noise...help

Hi folks after some advice and if anyone knows a solution or if Sony has worked a solution to this problem, as I cannot find a definitive answer anywhere.

The TV when on or off makes clicking, popping, cracking noises. Although its definitely more pronounced when the TV is off.

There is no set rhythm to the noises. Sometimes they are seconds apart and at other times several minutes. I have searched plenty of threads on the Internet and double checked the instruction manual. Some people say this is just normal heating and cooling noises, what even after the TV has been off for several days!!! Others say its a problem with the power input and to make sure the TV is plugged into the wall direct and not a plug extender. Well it is plugged into the wall. Others say get an uninterruptible power source. Why should I do this, does every Sony TV owner who purchases a TV with this problem have to purchase expensive extras. I have had this TV 11months now and it is really starting to become annoying. My friends Samsung doesn't have this problem and nor does my 19" Sony in the bedroom. Even sat here now the TV, which has been off for over two hours is popping away in the corner. Having looked at various threads on line, this clearly isn't a new problem and has been around for sometime. I hope someone can help. We look forward to hearing from you.

expansion noises are normal in most cases but most certainly not after two hours!!, i would suspect that its more likely to be a power supply fault and would suggest a call for further advice and assistance from a Sony authorised repair centre.

may i suggest for the perpose of elimination that after use could you unplug it from the mains and see if it still makes noises then, if it does not then it has to be as said, if it does, then, a ghost in the machine perhaps!

I have contacted Sony and awaiting for them to send an engineer to have a look. As you say this just isnt right.

Hi Phil, I have exactly the same issue with mine and no idea how to fix . Would love to know if you find out the cause from the engineer. Other issue I'm having, and don't know if it's linked or not but over time Since I've owned it (approx 14 months) I've had to increase the volume more and more to get the same output as it used to be. I'm now at the stage of having the volume level at 30 odd just to be able to hear it. The cracking is main issue though, so it can't just be us experiencing it. Keep me posted with your findings 👍🏻

Iv only had mine three months its so loud i thought some one was breaking it to my house as i could hear it from my bedroom. If ots normal do you think we would have purchased it Noooooo

I have a Sony Bravia as well, I'm not going to look at the model number or anything like that, but I noticed the sound when I moved it from the living room into my bedroom. I figured I'd treat myself this black Friday, so I take advantage of a nice priced 65"and donate my 32" Roku TCL (which btw was a wonderful lil TV) and move my 40" or 43" Sony bravia into my bedroom and casually sit it next to my dresser (I wasn't ready to downupgrade from my phone app operated TCL just yet, I was dreading having to get up to change the input or tune the channel, or just- you know, get up) and while I lay on my bed relaxing watching "Mom" reruns, I hear a clicking/ popping noise that I'd never heard before. So I grab my phone and mute "Mom" trying to figure out if I had a ghost wandering around in my room or a mouse in the walls,I suddenly hear the popping/ cracking again. At this point, I am clearly perplexed because the only electronic in my room that's even plugged in is my TV that's been plugged in, therefore nothing should be making any noises, right? WRONG! As the sound continued I quickly realized that the sounds were coming from the Sony bravia that sit on the floor next to my dresser, UNPLUGGED! Now the temp in my home is a consistent 72°-73°f all 4 seasons so the whole temperature theory is not applicable and as far as a power surge, again, it was not plugged into the wall, leaving us with the only reasonable explanation for the click/poppin phenomenon: it's an Alien created spy device that is studying human algorithms in order to destroy the human race! But- this is only my personal belief... btw before I bumped into this forum, I asked my Google assistant out loud in my room why my Sony bravia made a clicking sound, and I swear it stopped doing it for about 11 mins and once I started to reply to this inquiry and got quiet, it started to tink tink tinker again. I promise I can't make this stuff up- totally unexplained noises from an unplugged TV? Definitely Aliens.

I thought it's just components expanding inside the TV when they heat up/cool down during/after use. But your Aliens theory is impeccable.
