Our Sony Vaio today developed a strange fault, where the physical keyboard would not work, but the on screen touch keyboard was still working. I have now solved the problem and am writing this in case it helps other uses. Firstly I rebooted the computer using the Assist button into the BIOS. The keyboard was still not working. I then rebooted with an external USB keyboard attached - this worked, but the internal keyboard was still not working. So it was looking like a physical keyboard problem and was about to contact Sony Support for a repair. I removed the power lead and battery (to get the serial number of the machine). When I replaced the battery and rebooted the machine in to Windows, everything is now fine. So - I conclude - the hardware on the motherboard that controls the keyboard can get itself 'confused' and in a state where reboots will not help; but taking all power off the machine, including the battery, can reset it back to a working state.
