Cannot play XA1 mp4 files on Win10

As per title, videos recorded on Sony Xperia XA1 using defau8lt camera appl fail to play with Windows Media Player giving error: Windows Media Player encountered a problem while playing the file.

Also fails when using VLC: error:

Unidentified codec:

VLC could not identify the audio or video codec

I have tried converting the  mp4 using Aiseesoft vide converter and no joy - just see black screen when playing.

What do I do?

Maybe try a different media player on the PC? or transfer the music files again in a different way
