Android 9 volume

Just had the new update. Now though, the volume keys only alter the media volume, not the ring/notification volume. Only got the option to put ring into vibrate mode or have to go into the settings. Is there a way to change this as I can't find one?

Just got Pie on XZ1 Compact and experience the same issue. Hopeless update. 

- Before you could also "expand" the vol bar - to get all available volumes. This does not exist either.

Using the "wheel" goes to full settings mode with sample ring tone etc when you change.

@Wierzej, keep in mind that some changes are not made by Sony, they are made by Google in the Android software, for example the how the volume slider works in Android Pie.

I'll gladly forward any feedback that you have regarding the camera UI, the alarm clock application, so please do elaborate a bit!

You are correct. This has been changed in Android Pie and you now only control the media volume. I understand that this change is not for the better for some users and I'll forward your feedback as well.

In this inconvenient situation, I found the way how to adjust volume without playing my ringtone to all people around me.

You need to enter phone ringtone edit menu. In this place volume rocker acts like it should all the time.

It is working on my xz1c.

One more annoying thing connected with ringtone volume. Imagine situation where you are at a meeting, obviously you switch ringtone to silence or vibration - no problem, by two simple steps you could achieve this easily.

But now, imagine that your ringtone setting is usually at the maximum or loud volume. When you want to switch back to sound mode, just like you mute it earlier. You will hear unknown loud "tap" sound with a volume level according to previous setting. For me, it is pretty indiscreet and annoying.

@drummachinayou can just the do not disturb toggle in the pull-down menu if that's bothering you. no tap sound when disabling it afterwards.

I could do this blind in my pocket before, just hold down volume until it vibates, convenient in meetings or church when it already started

Google made some mistakes or to put it mildly some incomprehensible decisions in the design of Pie.

IMO this volume behavior is one of those.

Best is to check all sound settings carefully and adapt Do Not Disturb to your liking.

And they managed to mess the do-not-disturb functionality as well.

Before, I could quickly put it on without it asking anything, but also if I wanted, I could define a time limit with the dropdown in the quick icons menu.

Now option is to have it always default to certain action. Or for it to always ask, what to do.

@drummachina, in your case, the do not disturb mode will be a better option to use as @najodleglejszy wrote, as toggling this off or on, will not make any sound. You can set the do not disturb mode up to your own liking in Settings > Sound > Do not disturb.

@Knatti, you can quickly turn the phone silent if you click on the volume button on the side of your device and then you tap the little bell icon in the square, just above the volume slider. Tap once to activate vibrations only, or tap twice to have it muted. Although I completely understand that you prefer how it was in Android Oreo compared to how it is in Android Pie.

@Hezer, I agree with you. I do kinda miss the old Do not disturb system myself as it was pretty straight forward when you had both the easy toggle to make it silent for an hour, and also the different "modes" (priority, alarms only and total silence) and it now requires a bit time to be set up.

I will continue to forward the feedback internally, however keep in mind that I can't promise that certain functions can/will be changed.
