Just had the new update. Now though, the volume keys only alter the media volume, not the ring/notification volume. Only got the option to put ring into vibrate mode or have to go into the settings. Is there a way to change this as I can't find one?
Solved! Go to Solution.
@Jonas
I dont wan to mute it at night (which needs now 2 actions instead of one before)
I want to lower the volume, I am on standby for work sometimes and just dont need it as loud as in a train when its beside my bed. But as soon I do that it starts playing the ringtone. (3 actions instead of one before)
Did you actually mean the bell icon, and not clock? there is no one.

@Knatti, you can quickly turn the phone silent if you click on the volume button on the side of your device and then you tap the little clock icon in the square, just above the volume slider. Tap once to activate vibrations only, or tap twice to have it muted. Although I completely understand that you prefer how it was in Android Oreo compared to how it is in Android Pie.
@Knatti, I see!
There is no way to change this, but as I wrote, I will forward the feedback, but I can't promise that there will be a change.
@Endorphinity, you are correct! I meant the bell icon, not the clock of course! I have edited my post now and thanks for pointing this out!
@Capn and everyone else
There's a workaround for the people who want to control ringer and notification volume when pressing the volume buttons. Simply install Button Mapper v0.73 APK, grant it accessibility permission, then map your volume up button to "Volume up" and volume down button to "Volume down". This will make the volume buttons control ringtone and notification volume by default and you'll see 2 sliders on-screen: one for ringtones and the other for media.
Note: DO NOT install later versions of this app, you'll find this feature requires a paid subscription (unless you want to support the developer, of course).
I am strugling with the same issue here, everyday since upgrade to 9! I rarely use my phone as a media device, but change the volume several times a day. This is the most stupid change you brought to the xz1 compact! And I dont care its you or Google! Bring back the Android 8 way! Why change something that works flawlessly? For the sake of the change? I am very angry!
I don't have this problem on my S9 plus on android Pie. There's a setting for turning it on or off. I can also swipe down after using the volume key to get a list of all the different volume bars quickly like media, notification,ringtone, system etc
Must be an sony UI thing. Hopefully Sony will bring back the option to change it.
Unfortunately having those options is a Samsung thing. Stock Android 9 is functioning the same way as we experience it as Sony users.
Really agree, I never need to change media volume so this has added multiple steps and now necessary to fully unlock phone to adjust ring volume.
Amazing that the Sony support rep has agreed that installing a third party app is a good tip.
Installing a 3rd party app for the volume button to do what it did last week? Ridiculous.
